Student work will be assessed according to teacher-determined rubrics.  The rubrics contain 1.) criteria to successfully accomplish the activities, 2.) “in progress” evaluations for individual students, and 3) final “group” evaluations of the final product.  Students are expected to participate as valuable group members, to have their work ready on time, and to work with their partners on their publications.  Since this is a middle school unit, the teacher can make some allowances for groups that contain students who chronically come to class unprepared, but some amount of peer “encouragement” will be expected from more responsible members.  All products will be available for review by other groups on large screen projection systems, if available.  Otherwise, students can view the presentations on the computer monitors.  The teacher will provide an opportunity for an informal critique by the other students.  Each small group of students will be evaluated on whether they can follow instructions provided to build a solar oven.  The instructions for the ovens contain guidelines for how to use them to safely heat pre-cooked food for a class meal.
